CUBED Science Webzine - February edition

We highlight humanity’s relationship with nature. A study by Dr Roland Ennos, from the University of Manchester, reveals the mechanics behind a medical injury known by doctors as ‘greenstick fracture’.

We also look at some fascinating research on plants from Professor Mark Chase, at London’s Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, alongside a team from the Natural History Museum, which suggests that meat-eating plants may be more common than previously thought.

Finally, an international team of scientists, lead by Professor Andrew Watson of the University of East Anglia, have mapped the absorption of carbon dioxide by the entire North Atlantic Ocean for the first time. It’s the initial step in their goal of developing a comprehensive carbon observing system to reveal where the Earth’s carbon is going. Prepare to be cubed....

Graduate scholarships at LSE
Scholarships are available for students from Myanmar starting a postgraduate programme at LSE in 2010

The Scholarships

One CV Starr scholarship worth £5,000 is available. Applications must be received at the School by the end of April 2010.

£2 million is available annually for taught master’s students from the Graduate Support Scheme (GSS). This scheme is designed to help students who do not have the necessary funds to meet all their costs of study and awards range from £3,000 to £10,000.

All MRes/MPhil/PhD students are eligible to apply for the LSE Research Studentship Scheme. The level of assistance given is determined by each academic department and is most usually a contribution towards fees. Applications must be received at the School by 11 June 2010.
