Idiomatic Expressions

Idiom ဆိုသည္မွာ ကာလေဒသအလိုက္ သုံးႏႈန္းပုံ၊ ဓေလ့သုံးစကား၊ အသုံးထူးသည့္ စကားလုံးစကားစုမ်ားကို ဆိုလိုပါသည္။

ျမန္မာစကားတြင္ "စကားေျပာဆိုပုံ" ႏွင့္ပတ္သက္၍ "စကားေဖါင္ဖြဲ႕ေျပာတယ္" ၊ "လက္ပံပင္ဆရက္က်သလို ေျပာတယ္" ၊ "ေျပာမဆုံးေပါင္၊ ေတာသုံးေတာင္" ၊ "ဗာရာဏသီ၊ ၾကိဳးနဲ႕ ခ်ည္" စသည္ျဖင့္ ကာယံထပ္ ေျပာဆိုမႈမ်ား၊ ခိုင္းႏိႈင္းေျပာဆိုမႈမ်ား ကဲ့သို႕ ျဖစ္ပါသည္။

ေအာက္ေဖာ္ျပပါ English idioms မ်ားကို ေလ့လာ၍ exercises မ်ားျပဳလုပ္ၾကည့္ျခင္းျဖင့္၊ ျမန္မာဘာသာတြင္လည္း အသုံးျပဳေလ့ရွိေၾကာင္းကို သိရွိလာပါမည္။

I. ေရွးဦးစြာ Number 1 to 8 ရွိ idioms မ်ားကို a to h ရွိ definitions မ်ားျဖင့္ ယွဥ္တြဲေျဖဆိုၾကည့္ပါ။

1. sleep like a log
2. smoke like a chimney
3. treat someone like a dirt
4. eat like a horse
5. drive like a lunatic
6. get on with someone like a house on fire
7. look like death warmed up
8. spend money like it's going out of fashion

f. soundly/ very deeply

အေျဖမ်ားကို ရွင္းလင္းခ်က္မ်ားျဖင့္ ေဖာ္ျပထားပါသည္။

1. sleep like a log = (f) soundly/deeply
အိပ္ေမာက်ျပီး သစ္တုံးတတုံးကဲ့သို႕ မလႈပ္မယွက္အိပ္ျခင္းကို ဆိုလိုပါသည္။

2. smoke like a chimney = (d) a lot, continuously
ျမန္မာစကားတြင္လည္း ေဆးလိပ္အဆက္မျပတ္ ေသာက္ေသာ chain smoker ကို "မီးခိုးေခါင္းတိုင္ၾကီး" ႏွင့္ႏိႈင္းတတ္ပါသည္။

3. treat someone like dirt = (g) very badly
အမိႈက္သ႐ိုက္ကဲ့သို႕ တန္ဖိုးမထား၊ နိမ့္ခ်၍ ဆက္ဆံမႈမ်ိဳးကို ဆိုလိုပါသည္။

ျမန္မာစကားတြင္ အစားအေသာက္အလြန္အက်ဴးစားသူကို စူဇကာပုဏၰားႏွင့္ခိုင္းႏိႈင္းသည့္ ပုံမ်ိဳးျဖစ္ပါသည္။

lunatic = madman = မိုက္ကန္းေသာ၊ အသိဉာဏ္ကင္းေသာ
ျမန္မာစကားတြင္ တေစာက္ကန္း၊ မဆင္မျခင္ ျပဳမူေဆာင္ရြက္ျခင္းမ်ိဳးကို ဆိုလိုပါသည္။

6. get on with someone like a house on fire = (c) really well
အလြန္ခင္မင္ရင္းႏွီးမႈ၊ အကြၽမ္းတဝင္ရွိျခင္းမ်ိဳးကို ဆိုလိုပါသည္။
