HEATHROW AIRPORT

Heathrow is 12 miles from the centre of London. The airport opened in 1946. Until 1955, there were no terminal buildings. There were large tents for people to wait inside for their flights. Now it is the biggest airport in the UK and one of the busiest airports in the world. It has got five terminals and is used by 89 different airlines. Aeroplanes from Heathrow Airport fly to 176 places in 90 countries. The most popular destination is New York.

Departures

People leaving the UK go to the check-in desks to get their boarding pass and givethe airline their bags. Then they go through passport control and security. Their bags are checked for forbidden items. In the departure hall, there are many shops and restaurants.

Arrivals

People arriving in the UK go through immigration or passport control. They get their bags from the baggage reclaim area. Finally, they pass through customs and then greet their friends and family in the arrivals hall.

Changes to Heathrow Airport

The newest terminal building is Terminal 5. It is very big. When it opened in 2008 there were lots of problems. Now everything is working properly. In 2012, a new Terminal 2 opens in time for the London Olympic Games. Some people think that Heathrow Airport needs a new runway. Other people think it is a bad idea because the airport is already very busy.

Heathrow airport facts

• Every year, 66 000 000 passengers travel through Heathrow Airport.
• 76,500 people work at Heathrow Airport.
• Heathrow Airport was called London Airport between 1946 and 1966.
