MULTICULTURALISM IN THE UK

The four countries England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own traditions and culture. Together they are the United Kingdom. There is a long history of people from different cultures living together in all parts of the United Kingdom. This is still true today.

Between 2006 and 2007, Owen Powell and Alex Horne started a project. They wanted to find one person living in London from every country in the world. Then, there were 192 countries. How many different nationalities do you think they found? They found people from 189 countries! Only three countries were not represented in London: The Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and Palau. These are all islands in the South Pacific.

Multiculturalism has been a feature of the United Kingdom for hundreds of years. Large numbers of immigrants arrived in the UK between the 1950s and the 1970s. Most of these people came from Commonwealth countries in the Caribbean and South Asia. Many of them stayed and made their homes here, becoming British citizens.

In recent years, after the creation of the European Union, a lot of people from countries in Eastern Europe have arrived. Additionally, the UK has long been considered a safe haven for asylum seekers.

All of these groups of people contribute to the multicultural nature of the United Kingdom. London is the most multicultural city in the UK. However, there are many other big cities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with people of many different nationalities, religions and cultures.

Did you know?

• There are about 61 000 000 people living in the United Kingdom.

• Most small towns in the UK have an Indian and a Chinese restaurant as well as a fish and chip shop.

• There are more than 150 mosques in London
