LEISURE TIME IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

Compared to some countries, British people have a lot of leisure time. Most people work or study five days a week and have the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, to do what they like. As well as the weekends, working people in the UK have a minimum of 28 days paid holiday. There are also nine public holidays every year. Students at most schools in the UK have 175 days of holiday every year, including weekends.

In the past, Sunday was considered a day of rest. Shops were not allowed to open and many people went to church. However, now many shops are open on Sundays. Only 15% of people go to church once a month or more.

The most popular leisure time activity in the UK is watching television. Other popular activities are socialising with friends and family, doing sports and hobbies and shopping. The most popular day to go shopping is Saturday.

In recent years, many people have also started to spend a lot of their leisure time online. According to the BBC, the average person spends 22 hours and 15 minutes online every month. Some people worry that it is unhealthy to spend so much time in front of the computer.

Many older people in the UK enjoy gardening as their main leisure activity. Gardening is also becoming increasingly popular with younger people. Every year, 157 000 people visit the world famous Chelsea Flower Show. This is a celebration of gardening with many beautiful displays. Growing fruit and vegetables to eat has also become popular in recent years.

Did you know?

• The average person in the UK watches 2.5 hours of television every day.

• Facebook is the second most popular website in the UK.
• According to a recent study, men have more leisure time than women in the UK.
