BRITISH ARCHITECTURE

There is a huge variety of architecture in the United Kingdom. London is perhaps the best place to see the different styles. There are houses and buildings that are over 600 years old, historic and imposing castles and churches, modern buildings, unusual buildings and iconic sports stadiums.

The UK doesn’t have a tradition of building skyscrapers like Japan, Dubai and the USA. However, the tallest building in the UK is the tallest building in the European Union. It is called the Shard London Bridge and it is in London (completed May 2012). The Shard is 310 metres tall.

Modern architecture in the UK often borrows from many different styles popular at different times in British history. Two of the most popular styles for modern houses are from the Victorian (1837 – 1901) and Tudor (1485 – 1603) periods. Tudor houses are different because of the wooden beams you can see on the outside of the house.

Every year there is a competition for the best new European building that was designed in Britain. It is called the Stirling Prize for Architecture. The prize is £20 000. Many different buildings are considered. In 2011, the shortlist included a new school, a theatre, an office block and a sports stadium for cycling in Britain, a museum in Germany and a cultural centre in Ireland.

Recently, some people have started building houses using new and environmentally friendly techniques. For example, some people have built houses and buildings using old tyres, bottles and straw instead of bricks. These houses are sometimes known as ‘earthships’.

Did you know?

• There are some buildings in the UK that are more than 2000 years ago. Many of these are in northern Scotland.

• It is difficult to get permission to build a house in the UK. There are very strict planning laws.

• The British Museum is the most visited building in the UK.

• The British Museum
