SHOPPING IN THE UK

There are many different places to go shopping in the UK, depending on what you want to buy. The way people shop is definitely changing because of the Internet. It is often cheaper to buy things online, although of course you cannot see exactly what you are buying before it arrives.

Shopping for food

Most people buy their food at supermarkets, but almost every town has an outdoor market at least once a week. Some people go there to buy fruit, vegetables, cheese, fish and other things. There are also ‘Farmer’s Markets’, where local farmers sell their food. In some towns it is also possible to order some food directly from the farmers. They deliver it to people’s houses once a week.

New or secondhand?

In recent years there has been an increase in the buying and selling of secondhand items. People use websites like www.ebay.co.uk to advertise things they want to sell and find secondhand things they want to buy. There are also lots of secondhand markets.

Sometimes these are called ‘car boot sales’. People bring things to sell from the boots of their cars. They sell things like books, toys and furniture that they don’t want any more.

The High Street

Most towns in the UK have a ‘High Street’. This is the main shopping street. In the past, these streets had lots of different shops. Now many High Streets look the same because most of the shops belong to big chains. There are also some malls in or near the big towns, but there are not as many of these as in the Middle East and the USA.

Did you know?

• There are 5140 High Streets in the United Kingdom.

• Most shops in the UK are open from 9.00am until 5.30pm.

• More than 50% of people in the UK do some of their shopping online.
