David - မသိဘူးဗ်၊ သိပ္မေသခ်ာဘူး။ တစ္ေယာက္ေယာက္ကို ေမးရေအာင္။

Fred: Okay… excuse me, could you tell us how to get to the beach?
Fred - အိုေက... တဆိတ္ေလာက္ဗ်၊ ကမ္းေျခကို ဘယ္လိုသြားရမယ္ဆိုတာေျပာလို႕ရပါမလား?

THE SEASIDE

There are many beaches around the British coastline. Many of the most popular beaches are in large towns and even cities. Some beaches are sandy, while others are pebbly. A feature of some seaside resorts is the pier – a very British piece of architecture. On a pier, you can walk out above the sea. There are often restaurants, shops and other amusements to enjoy.

There is a long tradition of visiting the seaside in British culture. Swimming in the sea became popular during the 19th century and lots of new seaside resorts were developed in the UK. People mostly swim in the sea in the summer when it is less cold. However, in some places, for example Brighton, there is a tradition of swimming in the sea every year on Christmas Day (December 25th) or Boxing Day (December 26th) – in the middle of winter.

In the summer, seaside towns come alive with fish and chip shops, ice-cream kiosks and carousels. On some beaches there are even puppet shows for children and donkey rides. However, these are less common now. On a hot summer day, many town beaches are very crowded. It can be difficult to find a place to sit on the sand.

On quieter beaches, people enjoy having picnics, building sandcastles and paddling or swimming in the sea. Some beaches have big waves and surfing is also a popular activity, especially in the southwest of England and Wales.

Did you know?

• Chesil Beach in Dorset, England, is the longest beach in the UK. It is 29 kilometres long.

• An ice-cream shop in Venezuela sells 860 different flavours of ice-cream.

• The first fish and chip shop opened in 1863 in Oldham, England.
