FAMILY CELEBRATIONS

In the UK, different families celebrate different holidays and key family events depending on their religion and background. However, the most common reasons for family get-togethers are birthdays, weddings, funerals and Christmas.

Birthdays

Most families celebrate birthdays by giving the birthday boy or girl presents and birthday cards. Children invite their friends to a birthday party. They play games and eat party food, like crisps, sandwiches and ice-cream. It is traditional to have a birthday cake with candles, whatever your age. Children usually have one candle for each year. They make a wish when they blow out the candles.

Christmas

For many people, Christmas is the most important time of year for visiting family. A typical Christmas Day is spent opening presents, going for a walk, playing games and having a big meal at lunch time. Some people also go to church.

Weddings and funerals

Some weddings and funerals are held in places of worship, for example churches, mosques or synagogues. Others are held in non-religious places that have a licence to do the ceremony. These events vary in size. It depends what the people involved want and how much money they want to spend. After most weddings and funerals there is a gathering of family and friends.

Did you know?

• Violet Jane Wood is the oldest person in the UK. She is 111 years old.

• 7.2% of people in the UK go to church on Christmas day.
