READING EXERCISE

BRITISH STAMPS

The postal service in the UK is one of the oldest in the world. It was started by King Charles II in 1660. In the beginning, only very rich people could send letters. They could only send them to a few places and they took a long time to arrive. There were no stamps.

The world’s first postage stamp came from the UK in May 1840. It was called the Penny Black. Stamps from the UK are the only ones in the world that do not have the name of the country on them. This is because the first stamp came from the UK.

These days you do not need a stamp to send a letter or parcel in the UK. You can print a label from the Royal Mail website. However, new stamps are printed regularly. They are often printed to celebrate an event or person’s life. For example, there were new stamps printed for the Royal Wedding in April 2011. There are also special stamps for the London 2012 Olympic Games. The only people who can be on a stamp are the Royal Family. Other famous people can be on British stamps but only after they have died. The King or Queen’s head is on every British stamp.

Some people in the UK collect stamps as a hobby, although this is less popular now than in the past. Some people collect stamps for fun. Other people collect stamps as an investment. Some stamps are very valuable. In August 2011, there was a British stamp on ebay selling for £80 000.

Did you know?

• Every day, 71 million letters and parcels are delivered or sent by Royal Mail in the UK.

• One of the most valuable stamps is the Penny Red from 1841. It is worth £120,000.

• Queen Elizabeth II has got one of the biggest stamp collections in the world.
