READING EXERCISE

NEWSPAPERS

Compared to other countries, the UK has got a lot of different national newspapers. There are ten major national newspapers published every day between Monday and Saturday. There are eleven newspapers published on Sundays. The newspapers are all different and traditionally support different political views. People say that you can know a lot about a British person if you know which newspaper he or she reads.

Newspapers in the UK have changed a lot in recent years. Before 2004, newspapers were divided into two types: broadsheets and tabloids. Broadsheets were printed on large paper. Tabloids were printed on smaller paper. Traditionally, the quality of tabloid newspapers is not as good as broadsheets, but they are more popular.

Now most of the old broadsheet newspapers have also started printing on smaller paper. Only three newspapers are still printed on big paper. There are still many differences in the way the news is reported. The tabloid newspapers usually have short stories with a lot of information about celebrities and sports. The old broadsheet newspapers have longer news stories and more debate about current affairs. They usually do not have as many stories about celebrities.

Recently, the number of newspapers sold has decreased. This is because many people have started using online newspaper websites instead. All the big newspapers have an online version. Some people say that in the future there will be no printed newspapers. All the news will be online. Do you think this will happen in your country?

Did you know?

• The Sun is the most popular newspaper in the UK.

• You can buy newspapers from all over the world in most cities in the UK.

• The first English language newspaper was published in the Netherlands in 1620,
