READING EXERCISE

BRITISH MONEY

British money is called ‘pounds sterling’ and is divided into pounds and pence. There are 100 pence in every pound. The symbol for a pound is £. For example, £5. The symbol for pence is p. For example: 50p. This is pronounced ‘fifty pence’ or ‘fifty pee’. 1p is pronounced ‘one penny’ or ‘one pee’. In informal English, people sometimes use the word ‘quid’ instead of ‘pound’. For example: “This cost me fifty quid!” A five pound note is sometimes called ‘a fiver’. A ten pound note is sometimes called ‘a tenner’.

There are four different pound notes (£5, £10, £20 and £50). There are eight different coins (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2). The coins are all round, except the 20p and 50p coins. These coins have got seven sides. Queen Elizabeth II’s head is on the front of all the notes and coins. On the back of each bank note is a famous British person. For example, Charles Darwin is on the back of the £10 note.

Scotland has got its own bank notes. You can use Scottish bank notes all over the United Kingdom. Before 1971 there was different money in Britain. There were pounds, shillings and pence. The new system is much easier to use. In 1992, the British government decided not to join the Euro currency. In the European Union there are 17 countries that use the Euro. Eleven countries, including the United Kingdom, use their own currency.
