British homes

Most people in the United Kingdom live in a house or a flat. Flats are often part of a house, but they can also be part of a big building or block of flats. A few people live in more unusual homes, for example on boats or in other vehicles.

About 66% of people in the UK own a house or flat. However, houses in the UK are very expensive, especially in London and the other big cities. The average cost of a three bedroom house or flat in London is £637,303. The cost of houses and flats is a big problem for many people.

Houses in the United Kingdom are lots of different sizes. There are three main types. A terraced house is part of a row of houses – the houses are attached together. In towns and cities, there are many terraced houses. A semidetached house has got just one house attached to it. Detached houses do not have any other houses attached to them. Detached houses are usually more expensive than semi-detached or terraced houses.

Most houses and flats in the UK have got a bathroom, kitchen, living room and one or more bedrooms. Some houses have also got a dining room, where people eat around a table, and more than one living room or bathroom.

UK HOMES FACTS

• 90.1% of people in the UK live in a town or a city.

• Only 8% of houses in the UK do not have central heating.

• The smallest house in the UK is in Conwy, Wales. It is just 1.8 metres wide and has got two rooms.
