David: Let’s try this shop. It looks like they’ve got lots of cameras.

Shop assistant: Hello. Can I help you at all or are you happy browsing?

Fred: Actually, we’d like some information.

Shop assistant: Absolutely. What would you like to know?

Fred: Well… what’s the difference between this camera and that camera?

Shop assistant: This one is a 20MP camera and that one is only 16MP. But the zoom on the 20MP camera is not as good.

Fred: Hmm… okay. And is the 16MP camera popular?

Shop assistant: Yes. It’s very easy to use and it takes great pictures.

David: Okay… and does the price include anything else?

Shop assistant: Yes, you get a camera case and a memory card.

Fred: Sounds good. What do you think, Sara? You should make the decision.

Sara: Yes, I think I like that one the most. It sounds like a good deal.

TECHNOLOGY IN THE UK

As in the rest of the world, there has been a huge surge in the development of new technology in recent years in the UK. From digital cameras to vacuum cleaners, computer games to hospital equipment, advances in technology affect all our lives.

Communication

One of the biggest areas of growth in recent years is the development of mobile phone technology. In the UK, almost 90% of adults own a mobile phone. Almost half of these have access to the internet. Most people send text messages or emails instead of letters. Social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter are also very popular.

The Media

Technology has also had a big impact on the way we access television, radio and the newspapers in the UK. People in the UK can watch many television programmes online, whenever it is convenient for them. Many people also read the newspaper online. There has been a big decrease in the number of people who buy daily newspapers. 13% of adults also now own an ebook reader. Does this mean the end of newspapers and books made of paper?

Education

Schools and universities have to keep up with the changes in the world around them. Children now have regular access to computers at school. Researchers predict that 80% of classrooms in the UK will have interactive whiteboards by 2012. Technological advances have also changed the way that adults learn. Distance learning at university-level is increasingly popular because the internet makes it so easy.

Technology facts

• Almost 93% of the population of the UK use mobile phones.

• 3 out of 4 adults shop online.

• There are over 31 million Facebook users in the UK.
