In the following poem, some plural forms have been left out. See if you can put them in again. To help you, the singular form is marked in italics.
Why English is so hard to learn
We'll begin with a box, and the plural is (1) _________ ;
But the plural of ox should be (2) __________ , not oxes.
The one fowl is goose, but two are (3) _________ ;
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find alone mouse or a whole lot of (4) ________ ,
But the plural of house is (5) __________ , not hise.
If the plural of man is always called (6) _________ ,
Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?
The cow in the plural may be (7) __________ or kine.
But the plural of vow is (8) ___________ , not vine.
And I speak of a foot, and you show me your (9) __________ .
But I give you a boot - which a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are (10) ___________ ,
Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?
If the singular is this, and the plural is (11) __________ ,
Should the plural of kiss be nicknamed kese?
Then one may be that, and three may be (12) _________ ,
Yet the pural of hat would never be hose.
We speak of a brotherm and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.
The masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
Just imagine the feminine she,shis and shim!
So our English, I think you will all agree,
Is the trickiest language you ever did see.
