THE HOUSE - LA MAISON

— l. To have a house of one's own (to be the owner of a house) is the dream of every man.

Most people live in a house which they do not own (which does not belong to them). They rent

a house or a flat (Am. an apartment) of which they are the tenants.

— 2. The lease fixes the conditions on which the landlord lets his house and the amount of the

rent to be paid on quarter-day. If the tenant fails to pay his rent, the landlord may turn him out,

but he cannot do so without giving him notice.

— 3. Some landlords have either furnished apartments (or rooms) or a single room to let: they

take in lodgers (Am. roomers) or paying guests. When a man cannot stay in a house, he must

move and look for another one. A removal is no simple affair.

— 4. lf a man is rich enough he can either buy a house or have one built. In the first case he

applies to an estate agent (Am. a realtor) who has a list of houses for sale. If he chooses to have

a house built he applies to an architect who proposes a site for it and draws the plan (or designs it).

— 5. The contractor supplies the building materials and the workmen. A yard is opened. The

first workmen, using picks and shovels, dig the foundations. Cement is laid in the foundations

and will support the walls.

— 6. The masons or bricklayers build them with stone or bricks joined together by mortar. As

the walls grow, scaffolding is put up. The walls of larger buildings are generally made of

concrete or reinforced concrete. The noise of concrete-mixers is quite familiar on building-sites.

— 7. Wood used for building purposes is called timber (Am. lumber). Carpenters make the

framework for the roof. It will be covered either by tiles or slates. The work is in charge of the

tilers or slaters.

— 8. The joiners have a considerable amount of work to do. They saw planks (or boards). They

make them smooth by means of a plane. The small pieces of wood which fly off are the shavings.

They use a hammer to drive in nails, a screwdriver to drive in screws, they bore holes, etc.

— 9. Meanwhile the plumber installs the pipes for the water supply. The locksmith puts on

locks. When they need fitting, he uses a file and a vice.

— l0. Now the plasterer comes to plaster the inside of the walls. These are later on painted or

whitewashed, The painter mixes his paint in a pail (or bucket). He lays it on with brushes.

He oftenhas to stand on a ladder.

— ll. The walls can also be papered; this is the paper-hanger's work. The glazier puts in the

window panes. The electrician installs the electrical wiring all over the house.

— 12. But you cannot settle in your house until the upholsterer and the furniture dealer have

made it liveable. Now at last you can move in and invite your friends to the house-warming party.

— 13. In spite of the considerable number of houses which are being built, the housing problem

is far from being solved. There are still too many dreadful slums. and people living in filthy,

overcrowded rooms. Many dilapidated houses need pulling down.

— 14. On the other hand many houses were bombed down during the last war. Prefabs (i.e. pre-

fabricated houses) were hastily set up and are still in use, in spite of the large housing estates

which have sprung up outside all large towns. Town planning still has many problems to solve.

- 15. The fact is that blocks of flats and tenement buildings are not popular with the English.

The average Englishman wants a house to himself. A modern house is generally detached or

semi-detached. It is a two-storied house, with the ground-floor (Am. first floor) and the

top floor (or upper storey). A house having a ground-floor only is a bungalow.

— 16. Outside it is much like the other houses in the street. Inside the same uniformity is to be

found in the furniture, There is a small front garden and a larger back garden. There may be a

garage on one side of the house, and a cellar under the ground-floor. Many older houses had a

basement with an area in front, enclosed by iron railings.

— 17. The space under the roof is the loft. If it is lighted by windows in the roof it is called

the attic (or garret). Above the roof rise the chimney-pots, and very often now, a wireless or

television aerial. Skyscrapers on the American model are still very uncommon in European towns.

— 18. A house has a number of rooms (or apartments) which are either small and even tiny, or

large and roomy (or commodious). The ceiling of a room is supported by beams and rafters.

It is more or less high or low. There are partitions between the different rooms, You walk on the

floor.

— 19. If the windows are wide (this is the case with bow-windows), the rooms are light. If the

windows look (or open) onto a narrow street, the rooms are dim, even dark.

— 20. Many people like to decorate their window-sills with pots of flowers. English houses have

no shutters. Blinds (Am. shades) are drawn instead. If you leave several doors and windows open,

or simply ajar, there will be a draught and the doors will slam. Most English windows, however,

cannot slam because they are sash-windows which slide up and down.
