Pro Consul – A2 (L)

The jobholder will provide support to the Vice Consul in the day-to-day running of the consular operation in Burma. Providing British nationals with the full range of notarial and documentary services and assistance to those in difficulty, in line with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Consular Strategy, consular guidance and business targets and local procedures.

  • Provide Consular Assistance across the full range of casework: visiting prisoners, dealing with deaths, hospitalisations, victims of crime, distressed British nationals, accepting and processing Emergency Travel Document (ETD) applications 
  • Handling correspondence, counter and telephone enquiries escalated by the contact centre. Verifying copies of documents for the local authorities. Taking consular fees and ensuring that the Consular Certificate is completed each day. Work on small prevention projects including up-dating contact lists. 
  • Liaising with, and acting as a point of contact for, local authorities. Providing translation in meetings. 
  • Assisting the Vice Consul in preparing for and responding appropriately to a crisis including accompanying him on outreach trips 
  • Standing in for Vice Consul when on ad hoc leave

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Ability to follow procedures and guidelines in making judgements and solving problems 
  • Ability to deal sensitively with difficult situations and people in distress
  • IT proficiency – using MS Office, Outlook and ability to learn FCO systems

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience of social media IT skills 
  • Experience of living in or an understanding of the UK 
  • Previous consular or comparable experience 
  • Willingness to travel at short notice to provide support in other consular sections in the region

Type of Position

Fixed Term, Part Time

Hours of Work

Standard part-time working hours are 17.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Salary Salary is at USD 516 per month.
